PowerTrunk is the First Vendor to Obtain Type Approval for Tetra Land Mobile Radio Base Station in North America
TETRA land mobile radio base station is approved and ready for sale in the U.S. and Canada
New York City, NY —March 10, 2010 – PowerTrunk™ Inc. a global leader in Land Mobile Radio (LMR) design, manufacture and implementation has been granted authorization from the FCC and Industry Canada for its TETRA BSR75 base station radio/repeater to operate in the 800 MHz and 450-470 MHz bands. PowerTrunk is the first company to be granted TETRA type approval for North America.
TETRA is deployed worldwide as the next-generation standard for digital land mobile radio. Until now the exception had been North America, where TETRA technology has not been permitted. The stated reason for the ban has been that TETRA could not obtain type approval given noncompliant emission masks that might interfere with adjacent channels. To overcome this problem, PowerTrunk modified its TETRA base station modulation to comply with North American requirements. Timco Engineering, a telecommunications certification body of the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology and Industry Canada, tested compliance and issued certifications for the FCC and Industry Canada.
“Users no longer have to wait to take advantage of the benefits of a TETRA solution,” said Jose Martin, COO of PowerTrunk. “Our TETRA LMR base station is ready to deploy in North America and we encourage users to evaluate the significant advantages it offers over existing alternatives. The PowerTrunk TETRA platform for North America is also P25 compliant. Users have two options: implement TETRA now, or implement P25 now and software upgrade to TETRA in the future if desirable.”
The first PowerTrunk TETRA pilot network is already in place in Canada and more pilots will be announced soon. Modifying the TETRA modulation in the PowerTrunk base station/repeater has had an inconsequential impact on performance. The structure of services and protocols are unaffected and functionality remains the same. Loss of power is minimal – less than 1dB. Were a waiver for TETRA to be granted and emission mask requirements changed as a result, PowerTrunk TETRA equipment could easily be software updated.
The TETRA standard offers many advantages over available alternatives. The lower frequency required provides longer range, permitting very high levels of geographic coverage with a smaller number of transmitters, significantly reducing infrastructure costs. TETRA provides simultaneous voice and data, integrated GPS capability and automatic connection to the GSM network. A single handheld handles four voice and/or data channels simultaneously and network maintenance is centralized. Its higher data bandwidth capabilities (28.8 Kbps) make data intensive LMR applications more efficient. TETRA works at high speeds (over 550 km/h), allowing the system to maintain connectivity in high-speed railways.
PowerTrunk-T is the only TETRA system that is 100% Ethernet IP. Users can build a secure and reliable network with distributed switching, distributed intelligence and complete fault-tolerant redundancy – and lower network costs even further by deploying standard equipment. With an outstanding 75 watts of RF output power in each repeater and triple-receiver diversity, PowerTrunk-T provides the best coverage available in a TETRA network. It is has advanced capabilities such as multi-slot packet data, FIPS Level 3-oriented E2EE management, real-time statistics of network performance and off-the-shelf solutions optimized for AVL, telemetry and transportation – all in a platform that is hardware-ready for migration to TEDS high-speed data. Designed for cost-effective scalability, a PowerTrunk-T network easily expands from a single site to nationwide using less equipment than alternatives.
